For this project students are really on their own to pick how abstract they want to be, and to choose a medium.
Our first lesson, we look at a lot of real trees and then work in our journals. Students are encouraged to try using value to add dimension to trees, and to add value to trees in the foreground and less so for those in the background. Students can also consider how to fill in branches and backgrounds (with designs as in our mandalas, or something else). Lastly, we also look at winter color schemes (as these are done in the winter).
The next two lessons, we look at impressionist paintings and representational works, reviewing how different mediums might fit different styles and moods, and then plan and complete a final piece. Students investigate different ways to make snowy texutures, and a lot of students use work from their journals to make partial collages.
These are mostly galleries of photos and other work that are good references.
