9:10 Morning + PE
As you let students in, please explain to them that they need to go to wearetough.org, click on ‘Morning,’ and follow the directions.
At about 9:20 the principal should do the pledge of allegiance and you can introduce yourself and take attendance.
On their estimation sheet, ask students for their high and low estimate.
Have the students line up at the inside door. Their line order is taped to both doors, but it is just alphabetical by first name. Walk them down the hall to PE. Adamaris is first in line and she knows where to go as do all the other students. PE starts at 9:30 and ends at 10:00 when you will pick them up at the same door where you dropped them off.
10:00 Math Directions + Recess
At 10:00 walk the students back to class. Have Shannon pass out the half sheet of paper.
Have them come in and sit on the carpet: they sit in rows with their group members.
Go through the directions on the Math Reasoning page (wearetough.org > Math Reasoning).
Run through the problem with them but please do not give them any information other than to clarify that 100 pennies = 1 dollar.
Recess which starts at 10:15. A couple minutes before recess, have them line up at the back door in line order. Adamaris will hold the door and you will walk the kids outside and around the corner. Once you pass the building they are free to leave the line and go start playing.
At 10:30, pick the students up from recess and have them go to their desks. Review the math instructions and have them start working. Remind them that they are working on being independent in getting help and noticing when someone needs help.
Have them start working.
Feel free to circulate and help students, especially Michael, Jenny, and Adamaris. They mostly may need helping in being brave and talking to other classmates.
At about 11:10, make sure Devan and Orquidia pass out snack.
At about 11:20, have students come to the carpet.
Tell them that they will be doing page 12 in their JUMP journal, which is a review of T-tables.
Remind them that they are to be active in getting and giving help, and that they need to check their work with a partner before they start ST Math. Send them to work.
*A teacher comes and pulls a math group at about 11:30.
12:18 El Deafo and Lunch
Have the students come to the carpet in a circle with their books. The book is on my desk and has a bookmark with the page where we left off. You can read to them, and if you would like you may ask some children to take turns reading a page if they and you so desire. Read until about 12:27. At 12:27 have the students clean up everything and line up at the inside door for lunch, which starts at 12:30. Have Emmalee take the lunch bin outside and put it at the front of our blue line. Just make sure to give her the badge so that she can get back in. Walk them down the hall to the cafeteria (the same place that you had PE) and they will line up to get their lunches. Kids who brought lunch will go sit down at the table. You have lunch duty for 10 minutes, until 12:40. You then are on lunch break until 1:10
1:10 Coding and Typing
Pick students up from outside, just like you did after their morning recess.
Have them come inside and come to the carpet.
Ask if there are any students that haven’t had Aiden or Shannon teach them to code yet. If there are, send them to the back table with Aiden or Shannon.
Tell kids they may choose if they would like to Code or using Typing agent for the next 40 minutes.
Discuss how they might divide their time.
Discuss how they might balance lessons and games in Typing Agent.
Have students close their computer, take out their black reading bins to their desks, and then join you at the carpet.
Explain that their job today is to try and finish their first draft of the narrative / story that they are typing. If they are done, they can go back and revise.
See if anyone can explain and give examples of what it means to describe, and not just tell, the reader what is going on in their story. Review that they need to find places where they tell the reader what is happening and replace it with description if they finish typing.
Review that you will help students get ‘unstuck’ as they write, but otherwise if they are stuck, there only option is reading and looking for similar situations in a book.
At 2:10 have students line up at the back door for recess, which starts at 2:15.
Pick up students from recess as you did after morning recess and after lunch recess.
Review expectations and send them right to work.
2:55 Reading Groups
Tell students to finish what they are typing, get their book and find a place around the room to read independently.
At this time, two reading teachers will come in the room and pull groups for about 30 minutes at the back table.
3:30 Remind students to make sure that their computer is on their desk. Have the students come to the carpet in a circle.
Ask who is sharing their rock. Call them to share.
Ask who is sharing their panther ticket. Call them to share.
Remind students that you will check them off to line up when they are standing behind their desk silently with their backpack.
Ask students who have afternoon jobs to raise their hand. Send them to go start. Remind William and Alex that I will lock the cart after school.
Send everyone else to clean up and check off students who are ready.
3:45 Call the students who are in line that walk home to head out.
Then take all the other students and walk them out the back door, through the playground, to the front of the school. Walk the students along the busses and stop at each bus and call out the number. Each student will get on their bus. You will be left with the students getting picked up in cars. Walk them down the sidewalk, past the busses and passed the building, and you will see a line of students on the sidewalk outside the gym. These students will wait there to get picked up by their parents in a care; they know what to do.
Make sure you check off with the person that has the clipboard near the front door.
Thank you for your time!
