Clothe mache Masks
This is a long and messy project. Its hard too. It teaches kids to make peace with mistakes, especially when they have a lot invested in a task and it doesn't come out the way they were hoping. It also requires a lot of focus. Those are great skills that come through in all art projects, but especially this one. I also love that the mask each student makes is not their own - it belongs to the student on whose face it is made.
The first lesson, the students are only observers, watching others who have done the project before demonstrate how to tie your hair back, cover your face and hairlines with lotion, cut proper bandage sides, run them through water, and apply them by smoothing to join the mesh layers with plaster. The second lesson we learn how to organize the project: how the students will work in teams. Then, over the next several lessons the groups make each other's masks. Finally, a few days later, we paint the masks and apply layers of sealant.
